Sting began a four-week run on Broadway on Tuesday in “The Last Ship,” for which he wrote the music and lyrics, in an effort to increase sales for this musical about shipbuilders in his English hometown. Advance ticket sales have improved for performances with Sting in the role of Jackie White, a shipyard foreman.

Sting — above center, in his only dress rehearsal at the Neil Simon Theater — appears in about 40 percent of the show, singing songs that include the fan favorite “Island of Souls.”
